Lauren Walsh and Annabel Wilson are two of fifteen Ireland Amateurs in the field at the ISPS Handa World Invitational presented by Modest! Golf. Both received Leaving Certificate and A Level exam results this week, but it was they who taught the professionals a thing or two on the courses at Galgorm Castle and Massereene today.

Both opening with rounds of 2-under par, they sit inside the top 10 behind early leader Eleanor Givens (ENG).

‘I thought I would be nervous this morning but I wasn’t. I was just loving it, soaking it all up,’ said Wilson after her round. ‘I have my Dad on the bag and I had my coach here this morning, it’s nice to see familiar faces around with being so close to home. There’re so many amateur golfers playing too so to know some people in my first professional tournament, that helps.’

Three-over-par at the turn, Wilson’s putter was the key for the back nine.

‘I had a really nice roll all day. I hit a lovely putt on the 5th, I made a really good read and just fancied it. I hit it exactly where I want to so it was nice for it to drop. The chip in on the next hole then was a bonus.’

Walsh had a quicker start to her round at Massereene.

‘I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, the course is a little longer than we would usually play in amateur events but I birdied the first and that gave me some momentum,’ she said.

‘I’m very happy with how I played, I’m delighted to be up there. My sister is on the bag this week, she’s a scratch handicapper, so she kept me nice and level throughout the round, and we just had a great time being out there.’

Home favourite Josh Hill is best of the Ireland amateurs in the Men’s event. A triple bogey followed up with an eagle ensured a level par round for the teenager.

‘It was just one hole that let me down the whole day, I was pretty solid otherwise. It’s my first Challenge Tour event, so it was good to see how I did under the pressure.
‘It’s lived up to everything I thought it would be. The pressure on the first tee shot was something I haven’t had before, then I just enjoyed the whole day. It was a good experience.’
