LEADER BOARD

Eoghan O’Donnell leads the way following the first of three rounds at the Irish Mid-Amateur Championship at Nenagh Golf Club.

Beginning his round on the 9th, O’Donnell turned in two-under par before carding two more birdies and one dropped shot on his back nine for an opening 69.

James McLoughlin (Portumna) sits one shots further back on while Ian Lynch (Rosslare), Gerard Dunne (Co. Louth) and Michael Flanagan (Portumna) are on one-under.

PREVIEW

There'll be no shortage of challengers however looking to take the title home, with last season's joint runner-up Colm Campbell from Warrenpoint back for his shot at redemption.

A serial winner on the Irish amateur scene, the International stalwart will hope to go one better than last year and return to the winner's enclosure after an extended absence of late.

That will be no easy task with some Irish Mid-am specialists in the field for this weekend's renewal.

Eddie McCormack, collected the title while romping to a five-stroke win at Galway Bay back in 2018 while stiff opposition is likely to come from the likes of Galway's Joe Lyons, Portmarnock's Geoff Lenehan, County Louth's Gerard Dunne and the low man in the field Gavin McKenna from Donaghadee who is off +2.9.

36-holes of stroke play face the full field of 66 players on Saturday before a cut to the top-33 and ties ahead of Sunday's final round. In the event of a tie after 54-holes, a three hole playoff will determine the champion.
