Level par rounds from Stuart Grehan and Jack Hume have Ireland at the top of the leaderboard after the opening round of the European Nations Cup.

There was a delayed conclusion to the first round as the field struggled to get around La Reserva in time on the opening day. That meant Jack Hume had to return to the course on Thursday morning to complete his round. Unaffected, Hume finished birdie-par-par to post 72 and give Ireland a five-shot lead.

On Wednesday, Stuart Grehan also posted 72 while Alex Gleeson’s two-over 74 was the other card to count in the team event. Dermot McElroy carded a 77.

With a team score of 218, Ireland are five clear of the host nation. Blustery conditions and treacherous greens contributed to slow play and modest scores on the opening day.

Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre leads the individual event after an opening round 70 but Hume and Grehan are in a share of third, just two behind.

Following yesterday’s delay, round two is likely to run into Friday although the Ireland players are out earlier today. Hume was due to commence his second round at 10am followed by Grehan at 10.36am. McElroy tees off at 11.12am and Gleeson begins at 11.21am.
