An eight-strong Irish boys team travelled to La Manga for an early season encounter against the Spanish, which also doubled as a coaching weekend for the visiting players, most of whom were playing competitively in Spain for the first time.

The Ireland team featured: Reece Black (Hilton Templepatrick), John Brady (Rosslare), Sean Enright (Limerick), Jack Hearn (Tramore), Ross Kelly (Tuam), Mark Power (Kilkenny), Cameron Raymond (Newlands), Edward Walsh (Mallow).

Facing a strong home contingent, which included Boys Amateur Championship runner-up Alejandro Aguilera and Spanish Amateur semi-finalist Eduard Rousaud Sabate, Ireland were second best in the opening day’s matches. During day two, the Irish players were much more at ease on La Manga’s razor-sharp greens, taking three points from eight singles matches. Spain won the overall match 15.5-4.5.

Accompanied by Ireland Boys’ Captain Cathal McConn and coach Stephen Hood, the players left La Manga buoyed by the experience. Last year, Ireland gained promotion and secured their place at the European Boys Division 1 Team Championships.

Spain will be among the favourites for the Europeans, which take place at La Manga from 11-15 July. Ireland’s next encounter is a two-day match against Wales in Rosslare from 18-19 March.
