Bridgestone Order of Merit begins with West of Ireland at Co Sligo (4-7 April)

Defending champion Robert Brazill leads the field at the West of Ireland Amateur Open for the first event in the Bridgestone Order of Merit series at Co Sligo (4-7 April).

The race for the Bridgestone Order of Merit begins earlier than usual this year as the West moves forward from its traditional Easter date. In another change, the match play format has been dispensed for 2019 in favour of a 72-hole stroke play tournament. These changes have come about for one year only as Co Sligo will also stage the Flogas Irish Amateur Open this year. The GUI’s blue riband event takes place at the famous Rosses Point links from 16-19 May.

The West gets underway on Thursday and reigning champion Brazill begins his title defence playing alongside Ireland internationals James Sugrue (Mallow) and Peter O’Keeffe (Douglas).

The West is the first of 10 events in the Bridgestone series. The top three players at the end of the season are guaranteed a place in the Ireland team for the Home Internationals.
