The Golfing Union of Ireland and Donegal Golf Club continue to plan for the All-Ireland Finals of the AIG Senior Cup, AIG Junior Cup, AIG Jimmy Bruen Shield, AIG Pierce Purcell Shield and Irish Boys Inter-Club Championship.
In this regard, the Union is monitoring closely the progression of the provincial stage of these competitions, which are for the most part proceeding very smoothly thanks to the co-operation of all participating clubs in getting their matches played in a safe environment and a timely manner.
With regard to the localised restrictions that applied to Kildare, Laois and Offaly for two weeks from 7 August, and which were extended on 21 August for another two weeks in Kildare, the completion of the provincial stage of the competitions in Leinster has been affected, and this is being taken into account by the Union's Rules and Competitions Committee.
On this basis, the Union can provide the following update with regard to the All-Ireland Finals:
1. It remains the Union's intention to complete the All-Ireland stage of these competitions.
As things stand, the restrictions have had a varied impact on the five All-Ireland competitions in Leinster. It is the assessment of Leinster Golf that the provincial sections AIG Senior Cup, AIG Jimmy Bruen Shield and Irish Boys Inter-Club Championship can be completed in time for the winners to advance to the All-Ireland Finals on schedule, but not for the AIG Junior Cup and AIG Pierce Purcell Shield.
Our current intention, therefore, is to continue to plan for the All-Ireland semi-finals and final of the AIG Senior Cup, AIG Jimmy Bruen Shield and Irish Boys Inter-Club Championship to be played on the dates previously announced (17-18 Oct), and to revise the dates of the AIG Junior Cup and AIG Pierce Purcell Shield to take place as soon as possible thereafter. We are working with Donegal Golf Club on this scheduling matter, and intend to confirm the dates for ALL five competitions in early September, after a further assessment of the public health outlook and the continued progression of the competitions.
2. To facilitate forward planning and logistics, the Union is planning to stage the All-Ireland Finals behind closed doors with only those essential to the running of the events in attendance.
This planning decision has been taken with regard to the current public health restrictions which do not permit spectators, as well as to reduce the logistics involved for two reasons – to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those involved in planning and to facilitate scheduling decisions to be taken at short notice as necessary. Live scoring will be available during the event, in addition to our normal comprehensive coverage across social and conventional media channels.
The Union once again wishes to reiterate its sincere thanks to Donegal Golf Club for their enthusiasm, patience and co-operation throughout this process. It also wishes to thank all participating clubs for the enthusiasm and good will with which they have embraced the competitions in the current challenging climate.
