They led the field in stroke play qualifying but there was little success for Irish pair Robin Dawson and Geoff Lenehan in the match play stages of the Argentine Amateur Championship.Dawson was the number one qualifier having scorched through the field with a stunning 64 yet his tournament ended on the first day of match play action when he bowed out in the last 16. Lenehan managed to go one step further but he ran into the eventual champion, Australian Cameron John, and went down 4 and 3 in the quarter-finals.Impressive wins against Brazilian Daniel Ishii (4 and 3) and Italian Stefano Mazzoli (also 4 and 3) saw Lenehan progress to the last eight. Dawson beat Portugal’s Afonsa Ma Viegas Neves 4 and 2 in the opening round but he was taken out on 17 in his next match by Anthony Quayle from Australia. The last Irishman standing going into Friday’s quarter-finals, Lenehan’s title challenge ended against Cameron John, who went on to beat Brazilian Andre Tourinho in the final at Tortugas Country Club in Buenos Aires.
