Mulranny and Ballinasloe took to the undulating fairways and greens of Mulranny's Nine Hole Links on Saturday 8 September in the first leg of the 'OK Castlebar' Jack O'Sullivan Final.
The customary atlantic winds may not have been present but their absence was more than made up for by the heavy rain that came in waves accross Clew Bay for the duration of the match. Both teams to their credit got on with it in a most sporting game.
Mulranny got their first game point on the board when Fergus Rothwell and John Kelly beat Jack Counghlan and Richie Carroll 6/4 in game three. This was soon followed when Eamon Mongan & Euegene McCormack won game 2 by 4/2 against Alan Maguire and Stephen Ruane.
The three remaining games were all still very much in the balance with no side really stamping their authority. Finally another game point came Mulranny's way as Michael Joyce and Alan McAdam beat Kevin Cuniffee & Michael Glynn by 2/1 in game 1. 3-0 to Mulranny and still two games with nothing between them.
The Mayo men put their local knowledge to good effect and steered home the remaining two matches, both victories by 1 Hole for Shane McDermott & Richard Keane and Christy McDonnell & Martin Moylan respectively to give them a result which must have been beyond their wildest dreams playing in their very first Provincial Final.
The second Leg is next Saturday in Ballinasloe and I'm sure they must feel that they have one hand already on the Trophy.
