Cleary's turn to smile

Woodstock's Tony Cleary finally gets that "W"

Tuam Golf Club played host to the Connacht Seniors Open Championship on 27 & 28th August.

Unfortunately the heavy rainfall in the West of Ireland this week did not see Tuam escape and with it brought a flooded course and a reduction to 18 Holes after Round 1 was abandoned before it began.

To the great credit of the Staff and Members of the Club play was possible on Wednesday and an 18 Hole Championship was undertaken by 100 of the original 120 entrants.

Many found the conditions difficult but many also found them to their liking and the scoring proved steady in the early part of the day. As always the cream eventually came to the top and Cleary posted +1, 73 covering the closing nine in -2.

The closest any player got to him was +3, 75 and this mark was achieved by five players - Pat Bevins, Noel McGrane, Alan Moran from the housing club, Hugh O'Leary and Gerry Vaughan.

The Trophy for Best Over 65, the Fred Perry Connacht Veterans Trophy, saw two players finish on +5, 77s. Michael Quirke was the first to post this score but was piped on the countback, last six holes, by the popular Michael Gaynor (Co. Meath)

Pictured hereunder is Tony Cleary (Woodstock) recing the Trophy from the Chairman Connacht Golf, Michael Heaney, watched by the proud host Club Captain, Rae Gilmore.
