Sweden's Tomas Persson became the first overseas winner of the Munster Veterans Amateur Championship when he carded a second round 74 to finished the championship on +4 and six shots clear of the field. Persson bogeyed the opening par five but got the shot back on the second with a birdie. He played very steady golf for the remaining 16 holes, adding 14 pars and two bogies to give him +2 total of 74 strokes to add to his opening 74. Mevyn Eager from Lucan took second place on 154 and Cork's Peter Cowley was third on 155. Former winner Bert Burke from Moate shot the best round of the day a one over par 73. Burke was three under par through six holes thanks to birdies on the 2nd, 3rd & 6th. A few bogies on the way home meant that he signed for a 73 and he finished in fourth place.
The course in Thurles was in great condition for the event and the club officers and staff came in for special mention by Munster Golf Chairman John Moloughney for the courtesy and hospitality extended to the golfers over the course of the competition. It was John Moloughney's last Championship event as the Templemore man goes forward to the role of GUI President Elect in February. John has served on the Munster Council for well over 20 years and for the last four years he has held the position of Chairman of Munster Golf GUI. The event was sponsored for the first time by the Horse & Jockey Hotel, the well-known Tipperary establishment joins a number of other Munster businesses in partnering with Munster Golf. The event completes the 2016 Championships for Munster Golf, which featured over a dozen separate events. Already the 2017 schedule has begun with the preliminary rounds of the Irish Schools Championships taking place this month.
