A superb weekend of golf in Thurles came to a close this afternoon when Kinsale captured their first AIG Barton Shield Munster title.  The Cork side overcame two tough battles against Dungarvan and Castletroy to win their second Munster pennant in 2018.  Castletroy had beaten Doneraile in the first semi-final.

The 17th hole in Thurles proved crucial to Kinsale’s success.  In the semi-final against Dungarvan both matches won the 17th to put the match beyond the reach of the Senior Cup winners.  In the final, both Kinsale matches halved the hole when it looked like they would lose.  In both afternoon matches it halted the momentum that was building for Castletroy.

While Kinsale won the final by two holes, the contest went all the way to the final match on the final green.  When Cathal Butler chipped on to two feet, that marked the end of the contest and Castletroy sportingly conceded the putt to their opponents.

Kinsale’s Barton Shield team will join their Jimmy Bruen team at the AIG Cups and Shields all-Ireland finals in Thurles in October.  Nenagh will compete in the Pierce Purcell, Clonmel represent Munster in the Junior Cup and Dungarvan take part in the Senior Cup.
