Byrne shot a very impressive three under par 66 to win the Munster Boys Under 14
Amateur Open at Lahinch. The final event
of the Munster calendar saw a full field of 72 golfers compete in testing conditions
on Lahinch’s Castle course. Very heavy
rain affected all but the last two groups, but that didn’t deter the field,
with six players shooting par or better.
The Castle course in Lahinch was in great condition with qualifying
conditions offering the field one final opportunity for a handicap cut this
year. Byrne, from Waterford, opened with
three birdies in a row from the second to the fifth and turned on -3. He bogied the tenth and twelfth, but recovered
with birdies on the 15th and the 18th to get back to -3
and post the winning score. Joshua Berry
(Doncaster) was second with 67 and Darcy Hogg took third place with a level par
69. Finn Dobbin (Malone) won the best
under 13 prize while Jack Murphy (Douglas) took the best under 12 prize.
The Munster Under 13 Close also took place
and that was won by Eoghan Cassidy (Kinsale) who shot an impressive 67 (-2).
