Joe Lyons leads Munster Strokeplay

Fahy and Egan three behined at halfway point

Joe Lyons (Galway GC) sits on top of the Munster Strokeplay leaderboard at the halfway stage, the Galway man has a three shot lead over the field with two more rounds to take place at Cork Golf Club tomorrow.  While many golfers struggled with the wind this morning, Joe’s key was keeping the mistakes to a minimum.  He had just one bogey in the first round and two more in the afternoon.  When you add in six birdies it meant he finished on -3 for the day.  Holder Alan Fahy (Dun Laoghaire) and Keith Egan (Carton House) are next on level par while Cork’s Gary O’Flaherty shot an impressive 66 in the second round to jump into fourth place alongside David Reddan (Nenagh) and Jack McDonnell (Forrest Little).

Scoring was tough this morning, a hard wind along with punishing rough meant that there were very few cards without a double bogey or worse.  Keith Egan was the only one to break par in the first round, but when the wind eased in the afternoon there were six golfers in the red including four scores in the 60’s.  The 36 hole cut fell at 154 (+10) with 42 golfers going into the second day.

Play gets underway tomorrow morning at 7.30, with the leader scheduled to start at 9.40.  The qualifiers will play another 36 holes tomorrow, at which point the Munster Strokeplay Champion will be known.

The Munster Strokeplay Championship is sponsored by Ryan’s Supervalu and hosted by Cork Golf Club.
