McGimpsey won his second Munster Seniors title today in Killarney after
shooting a one under par 71 to win by one.
Two birdies on the back nine was the difference as the Royal Portrush
man won by a single shot. After opening
yesterday with a 74, McGimpsey was four off the lead. A winner in 2016 in Tramore, McGimpsey won
again on the western side of the province this time. He played the first nine today in one over
par, but seven pars and two birdies on the way back helped him into pole
position. Runner-up Bob Loftus was out
early this morning and the Lahinch golfer posted a second successive 73 for 146
(+2) and the clubhouse lead. As the wind
picked up many thought Loftus would keep the lead, but McGimpsey produced the
only sub-par round of the day to leapfrog Loftus.
Lyons (Cork) was third on +5 after a second round 72, and Karl Bornemann
(Douglas) also shot level par to take fourth place on +6. Mahon’s Fergus Golden won the nett section, beating
Killarney’s Paul Murphy on the countback.
Overnight leader Cormac Finn closed with a disappointing 81 after
dropping six shots on the back nine.
Cowley from Cork won the Munster Veterans title. A previous winner from 2013, and a winner of
the Munster Seniors in 2006, Cowley beat Michael Quirke by one shot to take the
