South of Ireland Amateur Open Championship
at Lahinch Golf Club 24-28 July
Sponsored by Pierse Motors VW

The 2019 South of Ireland will have one of the strongest fields ever taking part in the event which takes place in Lahinch next month.  Entries closed Wednesday night with 219 entries for the 150 places in the field.  With the top entrants playing of +4 or better, the likelihood is that the entire field in the draw will be made up from scratch golfers.  While all eyes are on the likes of holder Caolan Rafferty (Dundalk) and Amateur Champion James Sugrue (Mallow), twelve of the fourteen members of Irish Mens Panel will be in Lahinch, with several Boys and provincial players involved too.

The three most recent winners, holder Rafferty, Sugrue and Portmarnock’s Conor Purcell will all be fancied in the Bridgestone Order of Merit event.  They will be joined by past winners Pat Murray and Robbie Cannon, and all five winners will be aiming for a second title – a feat not achieved since Adrian Morrow’s second win in 1996.

The Dubai Duty Free Irish Open takes centre stage in West Clare next week, but soon after the focus will turn to the annual challenge that is the South.  The 118th staging will feature a 36 stroke play qualifier over the opening two days.  The top 59 plus 5 of the Walker Cup panellists qualify to go through to the match play stage which will be held over three days.  Pierse Motors VW are once again the main sponsors of the event which gets underway on Wednesday 24 July.
