South of Ireland Amateur Open Championship 2019At Lahinch Golf Club 24-28 July 2019Sponsored by Pierse Motors VW
There were plenty of surprises in Lahinch today Friday 26 July as the first two match play rounds were completed. Showers and stiff winds toughened up the course today in contrast to the opening days of the championship. Despite the varied conditions, the quality of the golf was high and there was a large number of spectators on the course throughout the day.
Among the surprise exits are all four Walker Cup squad members. They all put up a fight but lost out in the second round. Caolan Rafferty lost on the 20th, Mark Power lost on the 19th with Conor Purcell and James Sugrue losing on the 18th. Jake Whelan, Keith Egan, Sean Desmond, Jason Rackard Tiarnan McLarnon and Kinsale's Cathal Butler deservedly take their places in the final 16 after good wins.
Top qualifier, Royal Dublin's Hugh Foley is through to the last 16 and will play Peter O'Keeffe tomorrow morning. John Murphy had two convincing wins to book his third round place while. With many of the favoured golfers gone, the championship is wide open with all 16 surviving golfers in with a chance of claiming their first title.
