Fionn Dobbin (Malone) has won the Ulster U14 Close Championship 2019 - held at Blackwood Golf Club.

The testing and beautifully presented Hamilton Course at The Blackwood in Crawfordsburn was the venue for the 2019 Ulster U14 Boys’ Close Championship.

The 16 boys with the lowest handicaps from the entrants were seeded into the first round of match play on the morning with the winners progressing to the quarter-finals in the afternoon.

The four boys in the semi-finals were Darcy Hogg (Belvoir Park), Noah Bickerstaff (Massereene), Fionn Dobbin (Malone) and the holder, Adam Buchanan (Malone).

Honours were even for the first six holes of the match between Hogg and Bickerstaff but one-handicapper Hogg then unleashed a winning burst of six holes in a row on his way to claiming a place in the final.
In the all-Malone second semi-final the players were evenly matched for most of the first nine but by the tenth Dobbin had established a three hole advantage which he never surrendered.

The final in the afternoon was a keenly contested affair with some excellent golf on both sides and the match was all square going up the eighteenth
with both players at level par.

Dobbin’s solid par at the last hole proved decisive when Hogg narrowly failed to get up and down from a testing lie in the rough behind the green.
