The Ulster Final of the Irish Mixed Foursomes was held at Bangor Golf Club on Saturday 24th August between Ardglass and Mannan Castle.

Despite the weather of the past few weeks, the course was in good condition. It was a warm breezy day, but that didn’t affect the standard of golf on show in an exciting and nail biting final.

Ardglass names first
Match 1 – Gareth Donnelly/Claire Rouke v Tomas Pepper/Geraldine Finnegan
Garth and Claire from Ardglass got off to a flying start going 4 holes up after 5, but Tomas and Geraldine fought back by winning the next 3 holes to reduce the deficit after 9 to 1 hole. This remained the score after 12, but a couple of pars from Mannan Castle over the next few holes brought the match to all square after 15.
Match 2 – Raymond Madine/Dorothy McMullan v Mark Lambe/Teresa Butler
This match ebbed and flowed over the first few holes with the leading changing hands a few times. However, after 9 holes Mannan Castle were 2up. Again holes were exchanged over the start of the back 9, but Mark and Teresa never let the lead go and after 15 holes were 1up.
Match 3 – Jim Cunningham/Margaret McNabb v Shane Donohue/Karen Forrester
As with the previous matches there was nothing between these evenly matched pairs. Mannan Castle took an early advantage and were 2 up after 6, but Ardglass weren’t going to give up and levelled the match after 8 holes. Strong play around the turn form Shane and Karen put Mannan Castle 3 up after 12, a lead they maintained after 15 holes.
Match 4 – Billy Blackwood/ Linda Coughlan v David Hanratty/ Mary McNamee
With only the 3rd hole halved Ardglass took an early 1 up lead after 6 holes, a lead they extended after 8 holes and remained 2up after 10. With 2 of the next 3 holes being won by Mannan Castle this was turning into another exciting finish. After 15 holes Billy and Linda held a slender 1up lead for Ardglass.
Match 5 – Johnny Feenan/Orla O’Neill v Raymond O’Hara/Louise Hanratty
Johnny and Orla from Ardglass got off to a fast start by winning the first 3 holes. Raymond and Louise fought back winning 3 of the next 5 holes to reduce the deficit to 1 down after 8 holes. With only 1 off the next 7 holes halved this was turning into a very good match, and after 14 holes Ardglass were 2up.
The final was in the balance at this stage with all matches very close the Pennant was still up from grabs.

In Match 1 Ardglass took a 1 up lead after 16 holes and with a par at 17, closed out the match 2&1.
Ardglass 1 – 0 Mannan Castle
Mannan Castle soon levelled up the final with a victory in Match 2 also winning at 17 for a 2&1 victory.
Ardglass 1 – 1 Mannan Castle
Ardglass hadn’t given up in match 3 and won hole 16 and 17 to send the tie down the 18th with Mannan Castle 1up.
Match 5 was soon being won by Johnny & Orla from Ardglass after winning holes 15 & 16 to defeat Raymond & Louise 4&2.
Ardglass 2 -1 Mannan Castle
At this stage it looked like all the pressure was on the pairings in Match 4. With Billy and Linda form Ardglass winning the 16th hole to take a 2 up lead into 17.
An excellent tee shot at 17 from Billy Blackwood for Ardglass to about 8 feet form the pin put all the pressure on David Hanratty who found the greenside bunker, with his partner Mary McNamee get the ball out but still not on the green the match looked all but over. However, an excellent chip from David found the bottom of the cup for a par. This then left Ardglass with 2 putts for victory. The first putt from Linda Coughlan grazed the edge of the hole but rolled a couple of feet past. The par putt from Billy found the middle of the cup and the Pennant for Irish Mixed Foursomes Ulster Champions was heading to Ardglass.
At this stage match 3 was called in.
Final Score Ardglass 3.5 – 1.5 Mannan Castle
