In what has been a very strange and changeable year one of the things to remain constant has been the high standard of golf required to win the GUI Junior Cup (Ulster) section.

Voted by the clubs on the island of Ireland as the No1 inter-club competition to play in this shortened year, it attracted a quality field of 67 clubs in Ulster.

This year’s competition included a change of format in that no qualifying was required and clubs went into a zoned matchplay draw. Three matches at home and two matches away were used to assist in social distancing while travelling. A short turnaround for matches also had to be applied to help facilitate with the running of the tournament. Clubs were fantastic this year in their ability to arrange and complete these matches in time and the Ulster Branch would like to thank them all for their assistance in this.

The final was played on Sunday 4th October at Donegal Golf Club on a very wet and windy day, but this did not deter from the standard of golf on display.  Two very strong teams braved the elements and competed in a great match, in which the outcome was never certain.  It was not until late in the match that the outcome was going Balmoral’s way.

The final result was Balmoral 3.5 - Cairndhu 1.5 and the Branch wishes them luck in the All Ireland Finals later in October.
