Recently it was highlighted that since 2014, over 3,000 women have joined golf clubs as introductory members through the Confederation of Golf in Ireland’s (CGI) Ladies Get into Golf programme. Fresh off their home performance in the 2017 Women’s Rugby World Cup last summer, some of the Irish Women’s Rugby Team decided to give golf a try at Druids Glen in the hope of learning something new.

Following a short introductory session with PGA Professional Patrick Geraghty, the ladies had the opportunity to take part in some of the games and challenges that CGI Women and Girls’ Coordinator Maria Dunne and the ILGU’s Carla Reynolds had set up for them. It became evident very quickly that the girls’ competitive spirit is not saved just for the rugby pitch!

“Through our Player Development Programme, Rugby Players Ireland are always looking for ways that the players can spend time together off the training pitch where they can learn some new skills have just have a bit of fun!” explained Nancy Chillingworth of Rugby Players Ireland. “There are so many opportunities to be made through golf and we hope that, on retirement from rugby, the players can use their new skills to develop themselves professionally and personally in the future.”

In attendance was Rugby Players Ireland Ambassador Fiona Coughlan, who captained Ireland to their first Six Nations win in 2013. Having retired from International Rugby following the 2014 World Cup, the PE teacher was up for trying something new;

“It was great fun today, golf is definitely something I always wanted to try and today was the perfect introduction!”

All high performing athletes in their own space, it was fitting that the players were shown the ropes by Curtis Cup player and new CGI recruit Maria Dunne;

“We were delighted to facilitate a taster session for the Irish Women’s Rugby team alongside Rugby Players Ireland, there were a lot of laughs and definitely some talented future golfers! Hopefully their experience on the day will give them opportunities within the game of golf in the future.”
