Having missed out on qualifying for the US Open by one stroke last week at Arizona Country Club, Olivia Mehaffey has secured a spot as an alternate in the Major Championship which at Shoal Creek, Alabama, this weekend.
The Royal County Down native tweeted earlier in the week:
"US Open Bound!! So happy to get a call yesterday to find out I am in the field for this year's US Open. Excited for this amazing opportunity and experience"
After some disruption to practice days due to thunder storms, the event gets underway with Mehaffey teeing off at 8.10pm Irish time alongside Solheim Cup Captain Catriona Matthew (Scotland) and Pei-Yun Chien. While Stephanie Meadow made her professional debut at the event in 2014, finishing in 3rd place and competed at the event again the following year, Leona Maguire, who makes her professional debut next week on the LPGA Tour, competed in 2016 and 2017. Mehaffey makes it five years in a row that an Irish Player will compete in the biggest Major Championship on US Soil - her third Women's Major Championship to date.
This trend has reinforced the success of the ILGU's High Performance Programme through which Irish teams have also tasted victory at both Women's and U18 level in the Home Internationals over the past couple of years. With the culmination of a number of years hard work coming to the fore at this years World Amateur Team Championships at Carton House, there is no doubt that there is much to look forward to for Irish Women's Golf in the future.
