Corcoran retains Irish Senior Women's at Monkstown

Suzanne Corcoran retains Irish Senior Close Championship trophy at Monkstown Golf Club.
Suzanne Corcoran won the1st hole at Monkstown to take an early lead against Catherine Reilly but gained no further advantage on the outward nine and Catherine had recovered the match all square by the turn.  Corcoran however remained steely and turned the match around again and by the thirteenth was 2 up and never lost this lead to win out 3 and 2 and retain her trophy.

Jean Scanlon (Newcastle West) wins the Plate Match Play (Shirley MacDonald Trophy) overcoming Kate Evans (Royal County Down Ladies) on the back nine to win 2up.

Friday 6th July
Reigning Champion Suzanne Corcoran (Portumna) takes on Catherine Reilly (The Heath) in the final of the Irish Senior Women's Close Championship at Monkstown. 
Corcoran was 2 down through 10  against  Donabate's Pat Doran but won the 11th, 12th and 14th holes with birdies and closed out the match with par of 16.

In the Plate (Shirley MacDonald Trophy), holder Kate Evans sank a  40ft putt from off the green for birdie on the 16th to reach her second consequetive final and will take on Joan Scanlon (Newcastle West) in the final.

Thursday 5th July - Match Play
Quarter finals
Suzanne Corcoran and Pat Doran both had nail biting wins on the 18th  against Lillian Harrington (East Cork) and Carol Wickham (Laytown and Bettystown) respectively.
Catherine Reilly (The Heath) recovered from 4 down at the half way stage against Ballybunion's Margaret McAuliffe to win on the 19th while Gertie McMullen got the better of Mandy McEvoy (Bangor) after 17 holes to win 2 and 1.

First Round
Suzanne Corcoran (Portumna) defeated leading qualifier and winner of the Therese O'Reilly Trophy Laura Webb (East Berkshire).  Corcoran took the last slot (sixteenth) for the Championship match play which rewarded her a match against top seed Webb.  It was a tight match but Corcoran's match play prowess was evident and her defence of her Irish Senior Women's Close Championship is back on track.

In the bottom half of the draw, winner of the 2015 and 2016 title Gertie McMullen (The Island) had a decisive 5&4 win against Mary Sheehy (Tralee) and looks a strong contender for a third title.

Kate Evans (Royal County Down Ladies) continues to lead the way and has reached the semi final in the Shirley MacDonald Plate Trophy while Mairead Ni Mhurchu (East Cork) carded a hole in one on the 13th with a 6 iron.

Wednesday 4th July - Day 2, Qualifying
Laura Webb leads the qualifiers at the Irish Women's Close Championship at Monkstown with an impressive 5 under par total.  Webb will now take on reigning Champion Suzanne Corcoran from Portumna.  The Championship rounds commence at 8:30 followed by the Plate match play at 10:00 where once again Kate Evans (Royal County Down Ladies) leads the way.

Tuesday 3rd July - Day 1, Qualifying 
With warm sunshine and wonderful views at Monkstown Golf Club, scoring came easy for 2014 past Champion Laura Webb (East Berkshire) who posted a two under par 71, carding 5 birdies in her round.   Carmel Kearney from Mallow had a very impressive 1 under par 72 while double past Champion (2015 and 2016) Gertie McMullen, The Island, finished level par.

Catherine Reilly from The Heath had shot of the day with a hole in one on the par 3 13th, striking a perfect 7 iron to record her ace.

Pre-Tournament Press Release
Suzanne Corcoran (Portumna) will begin her defence of the Irish Senior Women’s Close Championship at Monkstown on Tuesday. 

Having defeated Maria O’Reilly (Headfort) on the final green last year at Bunclody Golf and Fishing Club, Corcoran begins her 2018 Championship alongside Pat Doran (Donabate) and Catherine Reilly (The Heath). Six of the victorius 2017 Home International team will be in action including Gertie McMullen (The Island) who has won the title twice in recent years. 

Competitors will play 36 holes stroke play on Tuesday and Wednesday the 3rd and 4th of July with 16 players qualifying for the Championship Matchplay and the next 16 qualifiers qualifying to compete for the Plate.
