​Guatemalan star claims top spot at the Irish Senior Open

Day 3
It’s been a whirlwind few weeks for Beatriz Arenas. Not only did she proudly represent her country at the World Amateur Team Championships in Carton House, but has now claimed the title of Irish Senior Women’s Open Champion. Beatriz card yet another 82 to claim the top spot by 2 shots from Sheena McElroy (Grange), Gertie McMullen (The Island) and Gigi Higgins (USA). 

Ireland claimed the top spot in the Nations Cup finishing with a total of 491. The team consisted of Sheena McElroy, Carol Wickham and Gertie McMullen and were a full 12 shots clear of the chasing pack.

Day 2
Consistency is key and that's exactly what Guatemala's Beatriz Arenas has brought to the table this week. After another stead 82, Beatriz has shot to the top of the leaderboard with 18 holes to play at the Irish Senior Women's Open Stroke Play Championship. However, hot on her heels are Grange's very own Sheena McElroy and Gigi Higgins (USA) only 2 shots back on a total of 166. These three players make up the final group going out tomorrow at 11:48 and is sure to draw a substantial home crowd.

Day 1
Sonja Bland takes a 2 shot lead going into day two of the Irish Senior Women’s Open Stroke Play in Grange Golf Club. The South African carded an impressive 78 on a day in which the majority of players found the course enjoyable, but testing. Both Terrill Samuel (Canada) and Lily Owens (Malahide) are two shots back on 80 with a further 6 players carding 81. All players will take to the course again tomorrow biding to make the cut (Top 40 +ties) for the final round on Friday. ​

The Irish Senior Women’s Open Stroke Play Championship returns to the capital this week having visited the four corners of the country in recent years. 

The 54 hole event runs from the 12th – 14th September and will see golfers representing the Home Nations as well as the USA, Canada, South Africa, Italy, the Netherlands and Finland. The field also welcomes 70 year old Beatriz Arenas of Guatemala, who represented her country at Carton House in the World Amateur Team Championships just a week ago.

From an Irish perspective, current Irish Senior Women’s Close Champion Suzanne Corcoran (Portumna) will get her bid underway alongside Mary MacLaren and Gigi Higgins (USA) while Open Stroke Play Champion of two years ago Gertie McMullen (The Island) tee’s off with playing partners Helen Jones (Royal Portrush) and Melissa Gotfredson (USA) at 11.40am on Wednesday morning.
