In Ireland, 1 in 9 Irish women are affected by breast cancer and there are 3,000 cases diagnosed annually which is set to continue to increase – making charity’s such as the National Breast Cancer Research Institute paramount to funding research in order to improve the diagnosis, treatment options, and outcomes for those who develop the disease.

While golf itself has proven to be a healthy, enjoyable and social outlet, the ‘Play in Pink’ Days support the national charity which funds a comprehensive research programme at the Lambe Institute, National University of Ireland in Galway.

‘Play in Pink’, which is supported by the Irish Ladies Golf Union, has been growing from strength to strength over the last number of years and has raised over €630,000 since 2011 with the monies going directly to Breast Cancer Research.

Hosted by club Lady Captains across the country, members suited up in all things pink at 120 Golf Clubs this year. In 2018 alone, in excess of €160,000 has been raised – again increasing from the figure raised in 2017. Club qualifiers from all corners of Ireland travelled to Glasson Country House Hotel & Golf Club for the National Final today where 26 pairs were welcomed.

With thanks to golfers all over Ireland, the main winner is the research team at the Lambe Institute in NUI Galway - led by Professor Michael Kerin.

Miriam Hand, National Play in Pink co-ordinator said:
“All of this would not be possible without the generous support of sponsors and Golf Clubs who help make these events more successful each year. As expected everyone had a great final day today I extend my heartiest congratulations and thanks to all who competed.”
