In a new venture this year the ILGU District Girls’ Championships are being run in conjunction with the world renowned Faldo Series.

Following the conclusion of the Munster and Ulster Girls’ Championships, won by Beth Coulter (Kirkistown Castle) and Jan Browne (Kilkenny) respectively, Anna Foster (Elm Park) is in pole position on the Faldo Series Order of Merit.

The ILGU Districts run open championships for girls which are steeped in history, the oldest of the five being the Connacht Girls’ Open which was won by Maeve Lawler in 1973. However in recent years, with the national and international amateur golf calendars becoming saturated with events, participation in District Girls’ Championships has dwindled.

To combat this, the ILGU and The Faldo Series have joined together and each District Championship will now count towards an Order of Merit – the top four players from which will be selected to attend the Faldo Series Grand Final. The Faldo Series Order of Merit will be decided by players using their best four performances from the five District events.

Three events remain on the Faldo Series Order of Merit, the final of which will be played at Kilkenny in August.
