WOMEN'S INTERPROVINCIAL MATCHES
GIRLS' INTERPROVINCIAL MATCHES
Munster last won the Women's Interprovincials in 2003 at Galway Golf Club with a team that included GB&I representatives Tricia Mangan and Claire Coughlan. Fifteen years dominated by Leinster and Ulster Teams followed but a determined Munster squad ended that drought at Mount Wolseley this week.
'I've been playing Interprovincials since I was fourteen and have never won one between girls' and women's,' said Sarah Cunningham (Ennis), now twenty-eight. 'We didn't know how to celebrate when we won!'
Ulster seemed to be in control when the final day arrived having already beaten both Connacht and Leinster but the Munster foursomes pairings secured 2.5 points from 3 in the opening session on Thursday to send shock waves through the Ulster camp. Jean O'Driscoll (Muskerry) and debutant Clodagh Coughlan (Douglas) added two further points to the board in the afternoon singles and when Paula Walsh (Doneraile) halved with Niamh McSherry (Lurgan) in the final match the victory for Munster was confirmed.
The margins couldn't have been slimer as, with two wins each, Munster, Ulster and Leinster could have ultimately won - however it was Munster with the most indivdual match wins, sixteen compared to fourteen for both other teams.
Meanwhile, the Leinster Girls continued their domination in the Girls Interprovincials. Three wins from three ensured a fourth straight title and Captain Stephanie McNiff has been a part of the last three.
'These are a great bunch of girls,' she beamed. 'I joked with them that they were to go out and win it for my last year but I couldn't be prouder of how they present themselves both on and off the course.'
The Women's and Girls' Interprovincials will next year be held at Slieve Russell from 7 - 9 July.
