It is with great sadness that the ILGU learned of the passing of Dr. Gerry Costello over the weekend.
Gerry represented Ireland in 1973 and Captained Ireland in 1984/1985. A member of Milltown, she represented Leinster from 1973-1975 and again in 1980.
She is remembered as a great character and very good with encouraging younger player.
Dr. Costello was instrumental in the formation of Seniors Golf in Ireland and herself won the Irish Senior Women's Close Championship in 1993 and 1994.
Gerry lived in the UK for the past 20 odd years and sadly passed away in the care home she and her husband were living after she contracted COVID-19.
When speaking about what she misses about competitive golf, Mary McKenna MBE remembers this: What does she miss most about not being a competitor? "Travelling across to Liverpool with a few of the girls and being met off the boat by Dr Gerry Costello's husband, Fergus, and being brought to her house for a slap up, full Irish Breakfast that featured loads of laughs and then a wee nap before heading off to whatever tournament we were supposed to play in that week. That was the routine for years and years and I loved it!"
May she rest in peace.
