Q&A with Our Team

Growing up around club golf in Dublin, the inter-club scene was always part of my summers. Covering the Jimmy Bruen or Senior Cup at provincial level, you see a standard of golf and a level of commitment from amateur players that deserves proper reporting. That's what motivates the editorial work at Golfnet - giving Irish amateur golf the coverage it deserves alongside the professional game.

The biggest misunderstanding is around the course handicap versus handicap index distinction. Many golfers still think their index is the number of shots they get at every course. The slope and course rating adjustment is the whole point of WHS - it makes your handicap portable and fair across different courses. Once golfers understand that, the system clicks.

Course form is the starting point. Golf is the most course-specific sport for betting - a player's record at a venue matters more than general form. From there, I look at strokes gained data, particularly approach play and around-the-green stats, because those tend to be the best predictors of week-to-week performance. The final step is assessing whether the odds reflect the analysis. A strong pick at poor odds is not a good bet.

Start with each-way betting. Golf fields are large - typically 144 players - so backing an outright winner is hard. Each way gives you a return if your player finishes in the top five or eight, depending on the bookmaker. It smooths out the variance and keeps you in the game longer. Also, set a budget and stick to it. Golf betting should be enjoyable, not stressful.
